Sniping is one of the most common ways that new token launches are immediately compromised. Understanding it and defending against it is non-negotiable for any planned launch with real money at stake.

What Is a Sniping Bot?

A sniping bot is an automated program that monitors the blockchain for new liquidity pool creation events. The millisecond a new pool is detected, the bot submits a buy transaction with high priority (by paying higher gas fees to be processed faster). The result: the bot buys a massive amount of your token in the same block as your liquidity addition, before any human buyer has a chance to act.

After the initial price pump from real buyers, the sniping bot sells its position for an immediate profit. This creates a large sell pressure event at the moment your community is most excited, potentially crashing the price and destroying initial momentum.

How Much Damage Can a Sniper Do?

On Solana, sophisticated snipers can buy 5-20% of a token's total supply in the first second of trading. If they sell this immediately after the initial pump, it can cause a 30-70% price drop in the first minutes. For a community that has been building excitement for weeks, a 50% crash in the first hour is psychologically devastating.

Anti-Sniping Strategies

Stealth launch: Do not announce the exact launch time publicly. Announce that you will launch "sometime in the next 24 hours" and add liquidity without a specific countdown. Snipers need to predict your pool creation to be ready. A stealth launch makes this impossible.

Pump.fun launch: Pump.fun's bonding curve structure is inherently more resistant to sniping than a direct Raydium pool because the mechanism is different. Snipers optimised for direct pool launches are less effective on bonding curves.

Initial transaction limits: Some token contracts include maximum transaction size limits in the first N minutes or blocks after launch. This caps how much any single wallet can buy in the initial period, limiting sniper damage. This requires custom contract code and audit.

Fake launch announcement: Some teams make a fake launch announcement, let the snipers fire on the fake block, then actually launch 30 minutes later. Aggressive but effective.
